Cheap kitchen remodeling ideas for Albuquerque, NM

In the last century, kitchens have gone from being very small spaces with one purpose only to becoming the central area of a home. The average person today spends an estimated total of 3 years of his life in the kitchen, which is no small number.

If you’re the type of person who loves looking at new kitchen appliances and have always dreamed of starting a kitchen remodeling project but haven’t had the money to be able to do it, here are some tips on simple economical ways to remodel your kitchen.

1) Replace the lighting. New lighting makes a world of a difference and can give a room a completely different look. Pendant lights which hang over-head have become extremely popular in the last several years. Built-in lights which are housed in the ceiling or on the walls are also quite popular, but make sure you set up separate light switches so you have the ability to change the mood of the room without having all the lights on or off.

2) Replace kitchen cabinet knobs or handles. Knobs and handles become tarnished easily in kitchens and switching our the knobs or handles can give the affect of all new cabinets without the hassle involved in buying new cabinets.

3) Refinish your kitchen cabinets. Kitchen cabinets are not too expensive but you’ll save money refinishing them yourself. There are many DIY (do-it-yourself) websites which can give you simple instructions on a DIY project such as doityourself.com’s wide range of projects.

4) Repair your appliance exteriors. Metal ovens and fridges get a lot of use and can become discolored and stained. In most home repair stores and even in car repair shops you can find heavy duty metal cleaner which can handle the majority of the stains.

5) Paint the walls. A fresh coat of paint can make your kitchen look years younger.

6) Install new flooring. Laminate flooring or tiling can be quite cheap and modernize kitchens which haven’t had a kitchen remodeling project in fifteen or more years.

7) Change your kitchen decorations. A new set of kitchen towels, oven mitts, a table cloth, salt and pepper shakers, plates and silverware may be the last thing you think of when you think of kitchen remodeling, but these accessories are used daily and new modern accessories can change the feel of a kitchen easily.

Home Additions are the best way to add extra space to your home without having to sell your house and buy a bigger one. There are many types of home additions and these are listed below with a description of each type:

Two Story Extensions - Two Story Extensions are designed to enlarge a home which has enough height, but could use some extra length or width. A two-story extension can be built on any side of the house, and the rooms inside a two-story extension depend on the size of the extension as well as the customer’s desires.

Second Story Extensions - Second Story Extensions are for homes with one level that would like to add a second story to their home. The entire roof is removed from the home and the second story extension is added on, followed by the roofing installation as well as the repair of HVAC, air, electrical, and anything else that had to be removed to put the extension in place. The rooms for a second story extension vary by home and by customer desire.

In-law Additions - In-law home additions are built onto any side of your home, and are usually built to include a kitchenette, living room, master bedroom, closets and a bathroom. These additions are not just one room being added to your house - they typically are meant for those who would like to up to double the size of their current home to accommodate an additional person(s).

Kitchen Extension Addition - Is your Kitchen too small? Kitchen Additions can add around 200 additional square feet to your kitchen, or any exterior wall of your exisiting home to function as a Room Addition. The existing roofing and siding will be matched to your existing home and a kitchen extension addition will be built on the exterior wall where your existing kitchen resides on a crawl space foundation.

Bedroom Additions - A bedroom addition "home extension" will be built onto an exterior wall of your choice with a crawl space foundation. Roofing and Siding will be matched to your existing house.

Bathroom Additions - The existing roofing and siding will be matched to your current home and a bathroom addition will be built on the exterior wall of your choice with a crawl space foundation.

Family Room Addition - The existing roofing and siding will be matched to your current home and a family room addition will be built off an existing exterior wall of your choice, crawl space foundation.

Sunroom Additions
- Sunrooms are large and spacious and typically look great no matter where you put it. A sunroom addition can also be a Large Family Room. The existing roofing and siding will be matched to your current home and a sunroom addition will be built off an existing exterior wall of your choice with a crawl space foundation.

Dormer Addition - Add space by adding a front or rear dormer addition. Dormer Additions are designed to give your home’s second or third floor more space and flexibility.
Adding a front dormer will certainly give your home great curb appeal, but it will also allow more light into your home, and increase the air circulation on the second or third floor.
The existing roof will be cut in the section(s) where the dormer or dormers will be constructed. A dormer will then be framed to your custom specifications.

Front Porch Addition - A porch addition will enhance your curb appeal as well as entertaining possibilities. Porch Additions are generally built onto the front of the home, however they are also able to be added to the rear of the home.

Garage Additions (1-3 Car Plans) - A Garage Addition can be built as an addition onto your home which is attached to the side of your home, or it can be built as a detached Garage Addition. Garage Additions can be built to accommodate between one and three cars. The roof and sides will be built to match your home roof and walls.

Garage Conversion - Convert your existing garage into a room with a garage conversion. Removal of existing garage door, installation of trim, drywall, flooring, interior door, siding, windows, and paint.

Bonus Room Above Garage Additions - Building a Room Over your Garage can be the ticket to a larger home. Existing garage roof will be removed and a master suite will be built above the garage.

Deck Additions - Add a spacious 16-by-20-foot deck using pressure-treated lumber.
Pressure-treated joists supported by 4x4 posts anchored to concrete piers. Pressure-treated deck boards installed in a simple linear pattern. A built-in bench and planter of the same decking material adds style and comfort to this deck package. Stairs included, assuming three steps to grade. Also included is a complete white vinyl railing system. Deck Additions can be completely personalized and the above is a sample of a typical deck addition.

Types of Home Improvement

Home improvement generally refers to building projects that change the layout of a home or alter the exterior properties of home such as the lawn, garden, garage or patio.

Home improvement projects usually have one or more of the following purposes:

Interior design for added beauty.
- Painting and wallpapering walls and ceilings.
- Installing flooring such as wood paneling, tiling, carpets, linoleum, or other flooring materials.
- Upgrading and repairing doors and windows.
- Installing new cabinetry for kitchens and bathrooms.
- Upgrading appliances such as sinks, bathtubs, fixtures for kitchens and bathrooms.
- Remodeling the backyard or front yard with patios, decks, porches or landscaping.

Repair
- Repairing electrical and plumbing.
- Roof replacement or fix-ups.
- Structural repairs caused by water damage or natural disasters.

Comfort Upgrades
- Installing new or improved heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)
- Upgrading bathrooms, music rooms and bedrooms with soundproofing.

Safety
- Fire system repairs or upgrades such as sprinkler systems, fire alarms, and other fire safety appliances,
- Home safety upgrades such as burglar alarms, security doors and security windows.
- Shelter installation or set-up for protection from earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes.

Home Additions
- Adding rooms to the home or adding an additional floor to the home.
- Converting unused space into usable space, such as converting one’s garage into a family room.

There are three ways to approach home improvement. The first way is to hire a general contractor who does the design plans, gets the appropriate workers to do the job, oversees the project management which includes coordinating schedules, ensuring the job is done properly and coordinating with the client to ensure the job is done as requested.

The second option is to hire the needed tradesmen to get the job done. For example if one wanted to do kitchen remodeling, they would contact an architect to draw up the plans, they would contact the construction works to do the necessary construction, and would contact the needed electricians, plumbers and other tradesmen necessary. This second approach can work for small jobs like painting a room, etc., but isn’t recommended for larger jobs such as home additions, kitchen remodeling, etc. For large remodeling jobs, it is usually more economical to hire a general contractor to get the job done from start to finish.

The last option is a “do it yourself” approach. There are several major home improvement retailers which provide all the materials and tools needed for self home improvement. These stores generally supply informative books which help a person by using step-by-step layouts on the different types of home improvement.

My personal advice from experience is to hire a general contractor for any home improvement project unless you have experience in doing similar work yourself. Home improvement projects may seem simple, and some small ones are, but doing the wrong thing or messing something up could up to double your costs. If you’ve done similar jobs on other’s homes to the one you need done on you home, there’s no reason why you couldn’t do it. But for large projects involving various skilled trades, a professional tradesman or general contractor is best. After all, it’s your home.
